Christmas is a time of joy and celebration for the Goh family this year. Little do they know, there are some special guests who not only share their home, but their Christmas traditions as well. Things change when a new addition to the household threatens to shake things up.

It’s such a privilege that God has given me the opportunity to be part of the set up at Suntec Singapore for this week. Watching the entire floor area from Halls 601-603 transform from ground zero to what it is now, it’s just awesome.

Over the past 10mths, it’s been a trying time not only for the church, but for us members as well. Facing challenging question from friends and families, what’s the best way to answer them. But yet through it all, we stood by our church. To me, this is where I found myself. This is where I discovered who I am. This is where I can actually do something that can impact people all around the world. This is where I get ideas that I’ve never thought I could come up with. This is where I can feel God guiding me in every step that I take.

Through hardships, by faith we know that God is still there with us. That He is watching over us. Personal experience from just over a year ago helps me understand too. Over that period of 5 excruciating months, I pressed on, praying everyday, praying for a breakthrough. And after that virtual/4th dimensional “smack” from Him, I finally woke up. I finally saw what God has in store for me. Well not literally that is. But more of what God could do if I wake up.

And a new day dawned.

New day. It’s gonna get awesome.

Was handling graphics and media for the Siloso Beach Countdown Party 2010/11. In particular, doing the countdown video for the whole beach and Sentosa to see. You know that one that goes 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 on the video screens as you shout yourself horse? Yeah, that was done by me. The only challenging part was to sync it with the exact correct timing. Cos since the whole to Sentosa was probably there, and the event is also broadcasted live on 987FM! How awesome is that. And everyone is looking to the screens to countdown, that’s one big stress boulder.

The original 50-sec cue failed. Missed it by almost a full-second. Luckily the 30-sec cue was precise and then it went ‘live’. Whoa.

Another eventful thing that happened. While operating the crane camera, almost got burned by the pyrotechnics that went off right behind me as I was craning out of stage, which meant that my ass was facing the pops. Boom they went without warning, and sparks landed on my hair and hand. Well done man.

Anyhow, be glad that 2011 is here. ORD-ing in less than 6mths time. Totally looking forward to it, actually don’t feel like doing any work right about now. Not too sure what they’re going to revocate me as either, or where I’ll be for my reservice. How about having reservist while doing NDP or doing photography, or media consultation? That would be awesome. Woo.

Thanking God for all the great things that has been happening in my life, and of course all the great people that I have around me, in ministry, in church, in zone. :D

In case you’ve been living under a rock, or just haven’t been visiting my Facebook and Twitter enough, you’d have probably known I was involved with this year’s NDP as Video Editor and Assistant Multimedia.

Praise God for this appointment. And since NDP is like probably the biggest and most hyped about show in Singapore every year, it probably did good to my portfolio as well.

Only downside is that NDP2010 didn’t seem to have that much emphasis this year. Undoubtedly, YOG’s show is definitely bigger than NDP2010 hands down. Anyhow, great experience nonetheless. Seen a lot of different people, made new friends, new experiences, watched how people change characters (bad to good, good to bad). Of course, it ain’t such a good idea to talk bad about folk behind their backs. Observing their working style was good enough. All in all, this is the conclusion on the working environment.

“Non-media folk always assume that we media people can work at the speed of light. Creating videos to them is done with a few clicks of the mouse, and a professional looking video is born. They also assume that we media folks can read their minds to know what they want without telling us anything to begin with.”

That’s a bit much ain’t it? But it’s true! Any media folk wanna say otherwise?

It doesn’t occur to them that our 10sec “Star” video took almost 2 hours to render out of After Effects on a Mac Pro. And that’s from AE only. Go figure.

This was our portable studio set up for the NDP Show Videos. The ones you see with like 1-3 people against a white backdrop. Quite simple eh? Just 4 kinos.

The nice part about NDP, apparently, SAF really values people with the FSV Diploma cert. Bumped into quite a number of FSV folk and alumni as well. Here’s Melvin, he works on the Mobile Column segments.

And another great thing, thank God we’re working on Mac Pros, and not the nonsense iNet or OA computers that SAF has. THANKS GOD. And when we have nothing to do, I usually just harness the power of the Mac Pro to do my own work too! Massive processing power in my hands. Look at my computer set ups.

This is the multimedia control layout, that was before they changed it. Total 12 cam operation. Though seriously, I don’t really see the need for 12 cams. It’s way too much. Underutilized.

Did CCU during my free time. And managing 9 CCU panels at once is no joke actually. It’s massive. Plus the fact that the show is from day till night, it’s constant changing of filters during the “magic hour”. But other than that, nothing much really.

Like I said, they were underutilized.

TVM’s very own Junjie on Cam 1! Poor dude had to be strapped to the scaffolding. He’s really good though. Tracked a F16s while zooming in to them circling around Padang. Not bad a feat indeed. And yea, that’s the new Sony HDC-1500R from VisualThree, a production company in KL, Malaysia.

Rows upon rows of lights. Martin Wash 2000. At least about 20 per row. And there’s about 4 rows at least per side. And the Padang has 4 sides. Go figure the amount of power used to just light up the area.

Okay enough of Padang. Off to other stuff. Poor dude used a huge tripod for his tiny camcorder. It kinda does the job though, but it looks like a joke.

And what’s media working without Starbucks. Always a cuppa SB CM in the morn, when the pocket allows.

And oh! Of course we had tickets. Though, viewing the show at Combined Rehearsal 3 and viewing the actual show on the day itself is actually quite different. Lots of changes really.

Other than working at Padang, other post production work was done at VHQ as well. Remember their infamous sigh on the 3rd floor?

Haven’t been there in a while. But frankly, they haven’t changed a bit. NOT ONE BIT.

This was cause I had to stay overnight at Padang to edit them videos. Madness. And to make things worse, no day off for that. OT and overnight editing were not reimbursed. Which kinda sucks? But, I’m not complaining.

Oh! And met them Mediacorp folks too! Rahmat and Jolene! What wonderful people!

Like finally someone who also understands the media industry and them non-media folk. That’s some comfort there.

And here’s the Visual Effects Director for NDP2010. Worked with him on them videos, all his brainchild.

Boo Junfeng! Yeah it’s the same guy you saw in the papers. The same guy who directed the movie “Sandcastle”, which has travelled around the world. Great accomplishment. No prizes for guessing that he’s from FSV too.

Mediacorp’s new $12million toy. The new HD OBVan. Build in Aussie. Debut during NDP2010. Awesome stuff.

And while we were bored. Played with them cameras with mega lenses.

And also leave them Mac Pros running rendering them videos. Here’s 3 Mac Pros rendering the videos I was working on. So I just sat there and waited. And oh, SAF has this weird thing about limiting us to Internet connectivity. No idea why. So you see my red MBP there? Hooked it up to my iPhone and viola! WiFi Internet. Password protected of course, to only certain people that I like working with.

Media events were also in store. Where members of the press come and view the progress of NDP2010 and stuff like that. Usually happens the day before you see it in the newspapers itself. This was one with the SMRT taxis and buses with NDP2010 flags and decals.

Had the chance to go to Mediacorp to grab some footage from them as well.

Finally working on a familiar system. Professional Discs.

It’s weird because NDP2010 was working on a HD environment (or so they say), and the only proper HD equipment they have was a Sony EX1R. No decks, no HD videos mixers. Amazing.

Avid Media Composer. Still trying to get a hang of it though. Watched them edit the reels for NDP2010 Broadcast including idents and stuff.

After that went back to Padang and installed…

Media Composer 5! Tried to work it but, something just wasn’t right. Think eventually still need the hardware no?

Speaking of hardware, here’s a couple of Hippos and a Spyder.

These babies run the mega projections on the City Hall Facade. Don’t think you guys saw it much on the Mediacorp broadcast though. Projected with HUGE Christie projectors. Can’t remember the rating though.

After less than 2 months of intensive work, my dear Mac Pro started to show signs of trouble. Poor thing. Or maybe it’s my crazy hunger for more processing power.

Frankly, it’s a bit weird to hear SAF people who were doing media shows for the first time saying that Mediacorp is really bad. I mean. Mediacorp is not that great yeah, no offence. But come on, compare the number of rehearsals they had with the number you had. SAF had a total of 27 or 28 rehearsals give or take. And that’s at Padang alone.

At least Mediacorp is doing a proper “live” show.

Overall, whether good or bad, it’s awesome experience. Always something to learn out of everything.

And the most important thing wasn’t about the new media works that I’ve done or new systems and workflows that I’ve learnt. It’s about working with different people, making new friendships, observing people. Overall, the most valuable thing I learnt, is about leadership skills. The good, and the bad.

Wanted to update, a lot of overdue stuff like Asia Conference, but can’t seem to find the time to do it. Shall squeeze some in some time soon.

Schedule was pretty much the same for second and third day. A morning opening session, then another mid day session, then a elective in the afternoon, followed by a night session. Of course with all e different speakers. Only thing is that I didn’t exactly get to listen to most if the sermons. So decided to go get the DVDs. Kept thinking to myself if it was the right choice to make. Cos, it doesn’t come cheap either. But okay, since now I’ve already pre-ordered it, there doesn’t seem to be a turn back point. God bless my building fund after this.

Learnt a lot of new stuff these couple of days. Mostly tech related, but also got to try out ‘live’ directing during the electives. Was kinda thinking like since there isn’t one needed, why not just try eh? Not a bad experience too. Playing with side LEDs is definitely fun.

POS was fine I suppose.though, it wasn’t as good as the previous Asia Conference in 2008, but given the time constraints and the lack of rehearsals and proper working environment, I suppose it should be fine eh? I don’t know. Or it could just be another one of those ‘i think I can do a lot better than what I just did’ syndrome. Argh. It’s kinda frustrating actually, lol.

And right now, being all alone at home, the feeling is weird too. Especially with all that happiness in the hall during the night session, somehow just wasn’t able to relate to it at all. Result? Lost and feeling lonely. Again. Not the first time, been kinda struggling with that since young I suppose.

But can it be healed? Then i got reminded by what one Pastor said before. That every successful person always have a weakness that tortures them their whole lives. Could this just be it?

Oh wells. Sometime really love to have some company. But then. Again, I’m picky in the kind of company I want to hang out without too. Irony?

In case I forgot to put it in my blog, I’ll be at Hall 8 every single day of the conference, serving in TVMinistry as tech ops. Cool eh? It’s kinda cool in a sense where there’s a problem that requires attention, someone goes to fix it, and no one else knows about it, because the event or service appears to run perfectly. Awesome.

Day 1 was okay I suppose. Total of 4 sessions in Hall 8 itself. Started of in the morning with a “record breaking” service, *ahem ahem*, (for more information, please ask those around), with Dr Cho. What a priviledge to listen to him, though it went crazily over time.

Second service was by Pastor Phil Pringle. Really engaged the crowd and stuff.

Third one was actually an elective I think. Steve Munsey did his famous Hollywood/Broadway style preaching again. Really love his preaching, presence of God just smacks down instantly. And here’s the cool part, the altar call, like the fastest ever. Within 15secs, the whole front floor area is crowded with people answering the altar call. And we tired folks in the control room were like, “what’s going on”?? LOL.

Last one, night session. Managed to grab some time to go out to the queues to meet up with some folks, mad hot out there actually. Thank God I didn’t have to queue up out there, otherwise I might just melt, cos I was wearing blazer and stuff. Pastor Kong preached. Pastor John Avanzini shared about financial prosperity when collecting the offering. (Oh everyone pretty much jumped awake during the offering. Oh you know why…..)

Anyhow, time to sleep, gonna wake up in 4 hours to go Expo again for Day 2!

Anyhow, managed to go down for much of the prep, setting up of all the tech stuff, running of videos, creating POS videos etc etc. Test  this test that. And not to mention, we have Hall 7 to set up from scratch, and Hall 10 as well?

Testing testing the video, color balance all.. Oh did I mention we have a new crane? Fantastic stuff. Now can dutch roll all. Had fun playing with the crane man…

Remember you guys saw the American Idol-like stage last weekend? Remember this on the floor?

Just guess what it is. Just make a big guess.

And no, it’s not going to open up and reveal Pastor Kong or Pastor Cho or Sun being elevated up. Though that would be quite cool too.

Went over to help set up the TBN News Studio at the conference rooms. Really nice right?

Helped set up the editor’s workstation at TVM’s control as well. These workstations weren’t there before today. Like, they were only there at around 1am in the morning?

Really cranky after that. I mean, left expo at like 3am, and there were still editors editing the videos for Asia Conference. Finally reached home at like 3:30am after a nice cab ride. But then, gonna cab back to Expo at 6am to be there for the first session. Man, this is gonna be fun.
